So you want you build an app… and you already have the BIG idea in mind.

“It’s going to be like X mixed with Y but subscription based with new updates each month.”

Cool! That sounds awesome…

But here’s the thing. The BIG idea is only ONE PART of what you need to think about…

If you want to be successful in building your app idea, you need to get really great at understanding all of the smaller flows, features, and screens within your app.

A great app experience is a collection of a bunch of small experiences:

  • The welcome screens
  • The onboarding screens
  • The payment process
  • What happens if a user forgets their password?
  • How easy is it to sync with their calendar or other apps they use?

You get the idea…

So how do you start thinking through all of those smaller ideas and features?

You look at other apps! Reference, borrow, model, take screenshots, observe, and repeat.

To help you with this task, I’m going to show you a walkthrough of an app I downloaded and purchased recently.

** DISCLAIMER: We had nothing to do with this app. We didn’t consult on it, design it, or build it, and they are also not paying us for this post, and this is in no way endorsed by them. **

Here is the description of Paradym from their site:

Paradym is an all-new, guided emotional wellbeing programme empowering you to uncover your emotional identity, break patterns and more – backed by the science of emotions. Your path to self-discovery begins here!

So let’s walk through my experience with their app. In each section I’m going to give my thoughts and observations on each screen to show you the process.

The Facebook Ad:

  1. This ad popped up in my feed and caught my attention. They had a great animation of their app with a very clear value proposition right there on the slide. The first thing that caught my eye was the design.

The App Store Listing

  1. When you click the ad it goes right to the app store listing. This is smart and this means that they were targeting only iPhone users with that particular ad.
  2. As I start looking through the app, I already LOVE the design of each screen.
  3. When I click on the actual preview screen it launches a bigger view. Notice how they made their app screens smaller and added those really nice feature messages on each slide? I don’t have to guess what this app does and what the benefit to me will be.

Featured App Screens

  1. More app screen features.
  2. Explains extra pieces or deeper features I might not have realized at first.
  3. The option for exercises seems cool to me. This isn’t just learning, it seems like there’s an accountability and practice piece to this app. Cool!

App Store Reviews

  1. Ok now I know what it does… Let’s see the reviews. One thing that’s interesting looking back at these screens is that the app only has 8 reviews! And they aren’t perfect… but at the time, seeing that other people have used the app was enough to put me over the edge. On top of that, the “less than 5 star” reviews have feedback that doesn’t really apply to how I’ll use the app, so we’re all good.

The Moment of Truth

  1. After I’ve browsed through the listing, I’m ready to download!

Welcome Screen

  1. This is the first screen I see when I open the app. Very cool value proposition. The design elements pull me in right away.
  2. Ok I’m creating an account! Smart they did this BEFORE the payment screens because if I DIDN’T buy they can remarket to me. The login options are easy and familiar.
  3. Ok cool! Data protection seems important, especially on an app dealing with mental health.

The Sales Moment

  1. Here’s where they get ya… Notice how easy these screens are to understand. “What is Paradym?”
  2. “Enjoy 5 days for free!” Ok cool! This is a great way to see if I like it before I buy.
  3. VERY CLEAR upgrade screen. No guessing about what I’m getting, what’s included, or how much it costs. Fun fact, Apple actually has a lot of requirements on these screens so nothing comes across as misleading. At this screen I’m in…

And I’m in the app…

  1. My subscription is in, and now I’m in the app… The next flow/feature that would come now is their “new customer onboarding” that actually gets you set up and configured within the app.

The bottom line:

There are SO many great apps out there and there are so many talented people thinking through tough questions and problems like onboarding, welcome screens, etc.

You should NEVER steal, and NEVER plagiarize, but why start from scratch?

Look at other apps, download them, and take notes. It’s easier than you think.

How did I do? What else did you notice in this flow that I missed?
